European agreement on processing of passenger data

Vertrekhal luchthaven

A deal to process Advance Passenger Information (API) was reached today as part of the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union. This deal is important for more efficient processing of passenger data processed in the fight against serious crime and terrorism. Thanks to this deal, API data from intra-EU flights can now also be analysed.

API data is data that is verified like the data found on your passport (name, date of birth, nationality, etc). Using passport scanners, airlines can automatically transmit this data to different countries. For Belgium, the National Travel Targeting Centre (NTTC) processes this data.

The NTTC led the technical negotiations on behalf of the Council with the European Parliament.
